What always sounds simple sometimes doesn't end up that way.
The General and his girlfriend are definitely people you don't want to take a road trip with. The trouble, besides their excessive tardiness, is that one of them doesn't read traffic signs and the other doesn't follow them. Add to that the General's overall bad sense of direction and you've got yourself a very frustrating time.
Did B and I listen to our inner voices before accepting the invitation for a day trip to San Diego?
Of course not.
But as frustrating as the day started out, the rest of it turned out to be very fun.
The purpose of the trip was to check out the San Diego Comic-con, the premier convention for everything comics related. Yes, a geek fest to be certain but a couple of friends had booths there selling their wares so we wanted to check them out and show some support.
And let me tell you, B and I were like two little kids in a giant toy store! Ever since the big Hollywood interest in comic superheroes, we were told the convention had seen a rapid increase in size and popularity. It didn't hurt that Keanu Reeves, Jude Law and Sarah Michelle Gellar were making appearances to promote their projects either. The place was packed for the entire four days we were told.
The convention was broken up into roughly three sections; the comic books, the toys and art, and video games. Everything and anything to do with Sci-fi, fantasy, anime, toys was represented. So if you were into Lord of the Rings stuff or Star Wars or Japanese Animation, you were in heaven. And as a surprise bonus, two of my favorite pin up girls, Alley Baggett and Aria Giovanni, were there as well.
But the best part of the convention has to be the fans that show up wearing costumes of their favorite characters. It was like Halloween in July!
I couldn't believe to what extent the fans would go through. I mean, some of those costumes were elaborate. Along with the usual superheroes like Spiderman and Superman there were guys in suits of armour, Hobbits, Japanese School girls, Pirates, Matrix characters, Harry Potter kids, and Star Wars people.
But my award for the day has to be given to the Coor Light man.
Just sheer comedy and originality.
Second place would probably go to these kids that tried to dress like Tetris pieces. Not sure how that fit in to the comics thing but that's part of the charm.
I've already made plans for next year but the question is WHAT I'm going to dress up as...
Oh....and Ike Turner was there also. Don't know what he was doing there though. Maybe a new comic about a crime fighting r&b musician that gets high then bitch slaps female villains?
