Trona and the new Jew review

Went to a screening of Trona last night as part of the LA film fest and upon an invitation by the Momimomi guys. It was their housemate's film and they were trying to get people out to support it. The film was pretty good - more about the atmosphere and feeling of being in small desert towns than actual plot, which I very much like. The whole crew of friends that came out all seemed like creative types with a good portion of them young, east coast jewish kids. Not that its all that unusual in LA but the afterparty at the Kibitz room was sponsored by Heeb Magazine which describes itself as the "New Jew Review". They basically cover all the more fringe subjects of Jewish culture - like a jewish Giant Robot mixed with Vice Magazine. The afterparty also included an art-damaged, raucous performance (art) by one of the actors in the film. It was probably the most out of tuned, slapped together, noisey, weird, lo-fi thing ever but it was done with such conviction that I absolutely loved it. Had it seemed like an act I probably would have hated it but the guy really does seem that strange and you have to applaude honest self expression.
