The few hours spent volunteering at the home for abused, neglected, or displaced girls turned out to be a bit strange. According to the info HG and I got beforehand, we were supposed to either do an arts & craft project or athletic activity with the kids. Sounded like little kids to me but turned out to be a bunch of high school aged teens. Most of the girls seemed more or less like any other teens - curious about turning 18 and going clubbing, in love with 2pac or Snoop, falling in love with a bad boy - but all of them were there for one reason or another. There are about 30 or so girls living at the house at any one time but we only spent time with about 13 of them. HG and I spent most of the 2 hrs making sidewalk chalk murals on the patio while the others either painted or played basketball. We both felt a little weird just being plopped down in the middle of all this. I can't imagine high schoolers jumping at the chance to spend a couple of their weekend hours doing watercolors with a bunch of strangers, even if it is just once a month. In the end it just felt like we didn't do much to help these girls out. Two hours is not enough, especially only once a month, to develop any repoire or lasting relationship.
