the groom with the snakeskin sneakers
E's wedding was b-a-n-a-n-a-s, bananas!
I arrived at the very posh resort, after a 2 1/2hr drive south of Puerto Vallarta, travel weary and bonded with my new car mates who were there from the east coast to also attend the wedding. The drive had quickly given all of us more than enough to discuss and laugh about. Through the dry coastal landscape and winding roads we dodged cows in the middle of the road, avoided roadside brushfires, got to know the huge Mexican speed bumps that you never see coming, and listened to a myriad of bands that sounded like Spanish language versions of famous English language bands(Mexican Cher, Mexican Journey, The Mexican Police).
The resort was literally in the middle of nowhere and very, very beautiful. Lush grass and mango trees lined the cobblestone driveway and all the rooms faced the bay with which it sits at. Its the kind of place that celebrities like Buffy the Vampire Slayer gets married at(which she supposedly did) and glamorous travel mags do stories on. The big news during my stay was the Seal/Heidi Klum sightings at the hotel. They were getting married in a house near the one E's wedding was at and would come to the hotel to workout at the gym or jumprope poolside every morning.
The great thing about the wedding was that it felt more like a group of friends on vacation than just a bunch of people going to a wedding. There wasn't any where to go so all 50 guests just laid around the beach or ate and talked or kayaked or fished and drank every flavored margarita known to humankind for 4 days.
The wedding and reception took place in an incredible home, just up the hill from the hotel, that sat on top of a cliff overlooking the ocean and had an insane infiniti pool that wrapped almost completely around the house like a moat. Guests were greeted at the entrance by a full mariachi band and more margaritas (a cocktail hour before the ceremony? guess they know their crowd haha). The sneaker obsessed groom wore a rare pair of Adidas snakeskin high tops that were crazy but not in the least out of place with his cream colored suit. The ceremony was good and short and peppered with laughter and jokes brought on by the "shaman's" spanish accented english. Anyone in their right mind would find it hard not to bust out laughing when "repeat after me....take my vows" comes out sounding like "take my balls" and the groom is laughing and trying to have him repeat himself for clarification. Pure comedy...
The rest of the night at the house will be one I will probably never forget. Not only did the speeches inspire, touch, and warm my heart but they were the most sincere I have heard in eons. It was a total love fest and there were very few dry eyes in the place even after this went on for what seemed like an hour. But it seemed all natural and honest which made it all seem right.
The party and dancing and drinking went on til the early morn. They served another round of food around 130am and then came the pool party. Nothing like a late night swim to burn off the alcohol you know?
I made my way to the shuttle vans around 3am - just about the time someone threw the wedding planner into the pool - very tired but beaming at the thought of what a special event I was a part of.
