art filled things

Los Angeles is a town that can surprise you. You never know who you might cross paths with on any night out. Sometimes its great, other times not, but the fun part is being caught off guard then realizing on the way home just how strange your new encounter was.

The gallery show was at a very posh loft/photo studio in a VERY industrial part of downtown. I went there on an invite from F who said he knew one of the photographers in the show. Rumors were that there was some kind of Cal Arts/Dreamworks animators connection to some of the artists but I never got any real confirmation on that. F said a couple of the guys worked on Shrek 2 and one of them was one of the directors. All seemed cool enough but it was the other guy F introduced to me that provided the night's entertainment.

He was a part owner, booker for a substantial art house theater chain that admitted he didn't even watch any of the films he books. Middle aged, with a soft, almost hushed tone to his voice, he by far had the most interesting conversation style. Maybe its partially an act but Mr. Movie would almost free associate on the fly, and practically be talking about three unrelated subjects at once. Its not that he didn't make sense but he'd be talking about how he can't stand the hip hop his pot smoking teenage son listens to, then out of nowhere announce "cheekbones!" in reference to a woman who was also present, and tell her that Libras always have dimples because of the said facial bones. I stood like a sideline observer just trying to follow his train of thought. F said that Mr. Movie had a serious drug and alcohol problem in the past and thus it may have had an effect on his current state. I think that may be an understatement....

In any case, I ended up buying a painting and Mr. Movie left with a blond girl with hot pants and platform boots.
